Does a pulmonology perform sleep study?

A sleep study records selected body signals while you sleep. Depending on the test, sensors may track breathing effort, airflow, oxygen level, heart rate, body position and sleep-related activity. Some studies take place in a sleep centre, while a suitable home test may collect a smaller set of measurements. A pulmonologist reviews the findings alongside your symptoms and medical history.

Follow the sleep team’s instructions about medicines, alcohol, caffeine, naps and the time to arrive or set up the equipment. Bring a list of medicines and describe snoring, witnessed pauses, morning headaches, restless sleep or daytime sleepiness. Try to follow your normal sleep routine unless the clinic gives different instructions. Return the equipment as directed if the study is performed at home.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting, confusion or blue lips. A sleep study is planned diagnostic care and should not delay assessment of an acute problem. Contact the clinic if symptoms worsen substantially or if you cannot use the equipment safely.

Ask why the study is recommended, whether it will be completed at home or in a centre, and what the sensors measure. Clarify preparation, medicine instructions, result timing and what treatment may follow the interpretation.
