Does a plastic surgery perform fat transfer?

Fat transfer, also called facial fat grafting or lipofilling, moves some of your own fat from a donor area to another part of the body. The surgeon usually discusses both areas because their shape, tissue quality and healing affect the plan. For facial use, the aim may be to restore selected areas of volume rather than change every feature. Some transferred fat may be absorbed during healing, so the final appearance can differ from the early result. The surgeon will explain the limitations and whether another approach is more suitable.

At your appointment, describe the change you want and disclose previous operations, allergies, medicines, nicotine use and conditions that affect healing. Ask how the donor site will be selected, what anaesthesia is planned and how both areas will feel during recovery. You should receive instructions about washing, activity, compression or wound care when relevant. Arrange transport and practical help if sedation or surgery will limit you immediately afterwards.

Contact the surgical team if pain, swelling, redness or drainage is getting worse instead of settling, or if you develop fever, wound opening, unusual colour change or a new lump that concerns you. Emergency help is needed for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden weakness. Before treatment, tell the clinic about an active infection or any new medicine.

Ask how much correction is realistic, where fat will be taken from, how the areas may change while healing and what alternatives exist. Discuss scars, asymmetry, infection, changes in sensation and the follow-up plan, including whom to call outside clinic hours.
