Does an osteopath perform manual therapy?

Manual therapy is hands-on care that may include gentle joint movement, soft-tissue techniques, stretching, or guidance with movement. An osteopath should first ask about your symptoms, medical history, medicines, injuries, and goals, then examine the relevant areas. Treatment is adjusted to your response and may be combined with exercises, posture advice, or activity changes. The approach should be explained before it begins.

Describe where symptoms occur, what makes them better or worse, and any pins and needles, weakness, fever, injury, or unexplained change. Tell the osteopath about osteoporosis, recent surgery, blood-thinning medicines, pregnancy, or other conditions that may affect hands-on care. Wear clothing that allows comfortable movement and ask what sensations are expected during and after treatment.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe injury, chest symptoms, or a limb that becomes cold or pale. Stop treatment and seek advice if symptoms sharply worsen, new neurological symptoms appear, or pain does not settle as discussed.
