Does an orthopedic surgeon perform meniscus repair?

The meniscus is a tough cushion between the thigh bone and shin bone. During repair, the surgeon places stitches or another fixation device to hold suitable torn tissue together while it heals.

Repair is not appropriate for every tear. The tear’s location, pattern, blood supply, tissue quality, symptoms, activity needs, and other knee injuries all influence the plan. In some cases, physiotherapy and activity changes are tried first; in others, damaged tissue may need a different arthroscopic treatment.

Before any operation, ask about crutches, knee movement limits, work and driving restrictions, and the exercises that protect the repair. Follow the prescribed progression even if the knee starts to feel better.

Seek prompt care after an injury if the knee is locked, badly swollen, visibly deformed, or unable to bear weight. Fever with a hot, painful knee also needs urgent assessment.

After repair, report increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, severe calf pain or swelling, or a new breathing problem immediately to the clinical team or emergency service.
