Short answer

Yes, an obstetrician can perform or supervise external cephalic version when turning a breech baby is suitable after an individual assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Provider
An obstetrician may perform or supervise the procedure.
Setting
A monitored maternity setting.
Purpose
To try to turn a breech or sideways baby head-down.

What the procedure involves

External cephalic version is an attempt to turn a baby from a breech or sideways position into a head-down position by applying pressure to the abdomen. It takes place in a maternity setting where the baby's position and heartbeat can be checked before and after the attempt. Your obstetrician considers factors such as your pregnancy stage, the baby's position, the placenta, fluid around the baby and your previous birth history.

A clinician may use ultrasound to confirm position and may offer medicine to relax the womb. The team explains possible discomfort, what happens if the baby does not turn, and which birth options remain available.

How to prepare

Ask your maternity team why ECV is being offered, whether you need to avoid food beforehand, and how monitoring will be organised. Bring details of previous caesarean births, medical conditions, medicines and any concerns about labour. Arrange transport home because you may feel uncomfortable or tired afterwards. Follow the unit's instructions about when to contact them if contractions, fluid loss or bleeding begins.

When to seek urgent maternity advice

Contact your maternity unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, regular painful contractions, severe or continuing abdominal pain, reduced baby movements or feeling unwell after the procedure. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the baby turned. Use the urgent service recommended by your maternity team if you cannot reach the unit.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your baby's position and your medical history make ECV appropriate, how the heartbeat will be monitored, and what alternatives will be discussed if turning is unsuccessful.
