During spinal fusion, the surgeon joins two or more neighbouring vertebrae so that the treated segment becomes more stable. The operation may include decompression, which creates more room for a nerve or the spinal cord, when pressure is contributing to symptoms. The approach depends on the level of the spine, the source of instability or pain, and your overall health.
