Does a maternal fetal medicine perform a nuchal translucency scan?

A nuchal translucency scan, sometimes called an NT scan or 12-week scan, is an ultrasound assessment of the fluid space at the back of the fetus's neck. It is used with other pregnancy information as part of screening for selected chromosome differences and some structural concerns. The specialist considers the measurement alongside gestational age, ultrasound anatomy, and any blood screening. The scan is not a diagnosis, and a finding outside the expected range does not by itself establish a condition.

When booking, confirm the timing window recommended by your maternity team and bring your pregnancy records. Ask whether you need a full bladder and how long the appointment may take. During the visit, the sonographer or doctor may measure the fetus and review early anatomy. If the view is limited by fetal position, you may be asked to walk briefly or return for another attempt. Ask who will explain the report and whether additional screening is offered.

A scan result that needs follow-up should prompt a timely discussion with your obstetric or maternal-fetal medicine team, not self-diagnosis. Seek urgent pregnancy care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or fluid loss, whether or not a scan is scheduled.
