Does internal medicine perform a second medical opinion?

The doctor considers the history of your problem, examination findings, scans, laboratory reports and the explanation you received. They may agree with the original assessment, clarify uncertainty or suggest another reasonable approach. An internal medicine doctor is especially useful when several conditions or medicines interact, or when care may involve different specialties. The opinion is based on the information available at the consultation and may include a recommendation for further assessment.

Request copies of relevant consultation notes, test results, imaging reports and medicine lists before the appointment. Write down when the problem began, what has changed and what you want clarified. Include the proposed treatment, its expected purpose and any concerns about side effects or recovery. Ask how the opinion affects your choices and whether the reviewing doctor can communicate with your current care team.

A second opinion should not delay emergency care. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, fainting, sudden weakness, new confusion or uncontrolled bleeding. If a clinician has told you to start time-sensitive treatment, ask promptly whether waiting for another opinion is safe.
