Yes, a general surgeon can perform abscess drainage when an examination shows that a procedure is needed. Drainage may be arranged in a clinic, procedure unit or operating room, depending on the abscess's size, depth, location and the person's health.

An abscess is a pocket of infected fluid beneath the skin or in deeper tissue. Antibiotics alone may not clear a walled-off collection, so the surgeon may numb the area, make a controlled opening and let the material drain. The cavity may be washed and left partly open with a dressing so it can continue to drain.

The surgeon checks for conditions that make the procedure more complex, such as a deep location, nearby important structures, repeated abscesses or signs that infection has spread. A sample may be considered when it would guide treatment.

Do not squeeze, puncture or cut the swelling yourself. Keep it covered with clean material, wash your hands before and after touching it, and tell the surgical team about allergies, diabetes, immune problems, blood-thinning medicines and previous reactions to anaesthesia.

After drainage, follow instructions for dressing changes, bathing and any prescribed medicine. Some cavities need packing or a planned wound review. Increasing pain, swelling or discharge should be reported rather than managed by repeated squeezing.

Seek urgent assessment for fever with a painful swelling, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, severe or escalating pain, confusion or marked weakness. Emergency help is needed for difficulty breathing, fainting or swelling near the eye, mouth or neck. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice promptly when an abscess develops.
