Does a general practice perform tuberculosis screening?

Screening can look for tuberculosis infection when there are no symptoms, such as before certain work, study or medical treatments. A clinician may discuss a blood test such as an IGRA or a skin test such as Mantoux. If symptoms or a result raise concern for active disease, further assessment can include chest imaging, sputum testing or specialist review.

Tell the practice why screening is needed, where you have lived or travelled, whether you have had close contact with someone with TB, and whether you have received TB vaccination. Mention cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss or coughing blood. Bring relevant records and ask whether the test requires a return visit or additional samples.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a persistent cough, coughing blood, chest pain, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss or marked weakness, especially after close contact with TB. Avoid close indoor contact with vulnerable people until advised if active TB is a concern. Severe breathing difficulty or significant bleeding needs urgent care.
