Does a general practice perform IV fluid therapy?

A practice may offer intravenous rehydration on site, arrange it through another service, or recommend a hospital setting when you need monitoring or treatment beyond a routine clinic visit.

IV fluid therapy delivers fluid through a small cannula placed in a vein. Before suggesting it, a clinician considers your symptoms, hydration status, medical history, medicines, and whether you can drink and absorb fluids safely.

Intravenous fluids are not automatically needed for every episode of thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure, or reduced intake. Oral fluids may be more suitable when you can keep them down. The clinician also checks whether another problem needs urgent treatment.

Call the practice before attending and ask whether IV fluid therapy is available, whether an appointment is required, and what assessment they provide. Describe the reason you are seeking fluids, how long symptoms have lasted, and whether you are passing urine.

Bring a list of medicines and relevant conditions, especially heart, kidney, or liver problems, and mention pregnancy or allergies. Do not delay urgent care while trying to locate an outpatient IV service.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, chest pain, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Markedly reduced urination can also signal significant dehydration or another serious illness.

A general practice may direct you to emergency care when you need rapid tests, medicines, fluid adjustment, or observation that cannot be provided safely in the clinic.

Ask what is causing your fluid loss, whether drinking fluids is appropriate, what type of IV fluid is being considered, and how you will be monitored during and after treatment. Ask which symptoms should prompt immediate reassessment.
