Does a general practice perform flu vaccination?

A clinician asks about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, immune conditions, pregnancy and medicines that may matter. They also check whether you are currently unwell. The vaccine is given into a muscle, commonly in the upper arm, and you are usually observed briefly afterwards. Mild soreness or feeling tired can occur; serious allergic reactions are uncommon but need immediate attention.

Contact the practice and ask whether it provides the seasonal flu vaccine, which groups it currently vaccinates and whether an appointment is needed. Bring details of previous reactions and relevant medical conditions. Tell the vaccinator if you have a fever or are recovering from an acute illness, because they may advise waiting until you feel better. Do not stop regular medicines unless a clinician tells you to.

Get urgent help after vaccination for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, widespread hives, collapse or severe dizziness. Contact the practice for advice about a persistent high fever, worsening illness or a reaction that concerns you. Flu-like symptoms after vaccination do not automatically mean the vaccine caused influenza, but significant or escalating symptoms deserve assessment.

Ask whether vaccination is recommended for you this season, which product is available, what to expect afterwards and when another dose may be due. If you have had a previous reaction, ask what caused it and whether an alternative plan is needed.
