Does a general practice perform ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?

A cuff is placed around your upper arm and connected to a small recording device worn on a belt or strap. The cuff inflates at set intervals while you go about normal activities and during sleep. Keep the arm still when it inflates, follow the practice's instructions, and record unusual symptoms or major activities if requested. The device produces a pattern of readings that can help distinguish consistently raised pressure from changes related to appointments, movement, or rest. Your clinician reviews the record with your medical history rather than relying on one measurement.

Wear a loose top that allows the cuff to remain on your upper arm. Tell the clinician if the cuff is painful, your arm has a wound, or you have had problems with blood pressure monitors. Keep the device dry unless instructed otherwise, avoid removing it without advice, and continue normal activities within the agreed limits. Return it at the arranged time so the readings can be downloaded and discussed.

Monitoring is not a substitute for emergency assessment. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness or numbness on one side, confusion, fainting, or a sudden severe headache with vision or speech changes. If the cuff causes marked pain, swelling, or persistent numbness, contact the practice for instructions.

Ask how long to wear the device, which activities to avoid, what to do if the cuff fails to inflate, and when the recorded pattern will be reviewed.
