Does a dermatology perform skin biopsy?

A skin biopsy removes a small sample from the area of concern for examination by a laboratory. The dermatologist chooses the method according to the lesion's appearance, depth and location. A shave biopsy samples the upper layers, while a punch biopsy removes a small round core that may include deeper skin. The area is cleaned and numbed first. You may feel pressure during the procedure, but the local anaesthetic reduces sharp sensation. A small dressing is usually placed afterward.

Tell the dermatologist about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding conditions, immune problems and previous reactions to local anaesthetic. Ask how to keep the dressing clean, when it can be changed and whether stitches are needed. Keep the site protected as directed and avoid picking the scab. The laboratory result may take time because the sample must be processed and interpreted before the clinician explains the findings.

Contact the clinic if firm pressure does not control bleeding, or if the site develops increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain or a fever. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading swelling or breathing difficulty after a medicine or dressing. Do not wait for the laboratory result if the area changes quickly or new concerning symptoms appear.
