A keloid is raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury. Excision removes the excess tissue, usually after the clinician reviews its size, location, firmness, symptoms and previous treatments. Because keloids can return after removal, the plan may include scar care or another treatment alongside surgery. Do not cut, puncture or apply unprescribed irritants to the keloid. Ask how the wound will be closed, what follow-up is expected and which aftercare method is suitable for the treated area.

Arrange a prompt review if the scar becomes rapidly larger, increasingly painful, warm, swollen, drains fluid or bleeds without clear injury. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, spreading redness with fever, or severe pain after a procedure. These changes can signal infection or another problem that needs examination rather than self-treatment.

Ask whether the scar is consistent with a keloid, whether removal is appropriate for its location, how recurrence will be addressed, and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
