Does a chiropractor perform a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on technique in which a practitioner applies a controlled force to a joint, often in the spine or a limb. A visit should begin with questions and an examination, not automatic manipulation. The chiropractor may discuss movement, posture, muscle tension and activities that affect symptoms. Some people notice temporary soreness or stiffness afterwards. The technique is not appropriate for every condition, and it should not delay assessment of symptoms that suggest nerve or spinal cord involvement.

Bring a list of medicines, previous operations and relevant diagnoses. Tell the chiropractor about osteoporosis, inflammatory disease, recent trauma, cancer, infection, blood-clotting problems or new neurological symptoms. Ask what the proposed technique is intended to change, what alternatives exist and how many visits will be reviewed. You can pause treatment if the force, position or sensation feels unsafe.

Seek urgent medical care for new or worsening limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe headache after neck treatment, fainting or trouble speaking. Prompt review is also needed for severe pain after an injury, fever with spinal pain or symptoms that continue to worsen after an adjustment.
