Does a breast surgeon perform breast abscess drainage?

A breast abscess is a pocket of infected fluid in breast tissue. A breast surgeon may examine the area and use ultrasound to see whether fluid is present and where it lies. Drainage may use a needle, a small incision or another approach, depending on the size, depth and position of the collection.

Treatment can also involve antibiotics and a sample of the drained fluid for laboratory testing. Breast abscesses may occur during breastfeeding or outside it, and the assessment should consider the surrounding skin, nipple changes and any recurring symptoms. The surgeon will explain wound care, dressings and whether further drainage or imaging is needed.

Arrange prompt clinical assessment for a painful, warm or swollen breast, especially when there is a tender area that feels fluid-filled or you feel unwell. Tell the clinician whether you are breastfeeding, recently stopped, have had a piercing or operation, or have taken antibiotics.

After drainage, contact the team for worsening pain, new fever, increasing redness, persistent discharge or bleeding. Emergency help is appropriate for confusion, collapse or difficulty breathing.
