Do You Need Radiofrequency Ablation After Facet Joint Injection?

A facet joint injection can combine local anaesthetic with an anti-inflammatory medicine to assess and calm pain from the small joints at the back of the spine. The response can give your clinician useful information, but it is not a stand-alone test. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat energy to interrupt selected small nerves carrying pain signals from the facet joints. It is usually discussed only after the diagnosis, examination, imaging and response to earlier care have been considered together.

Record how much your pain changed, when the change began, how long it lasted and which activities became easier. Tell your clinician whether back or neck pain returned, and whether numbness, weakness or leg or arm symptoms were present. Ask whether physiotherapy, movement changes, medication review or another assessment should come first. If ablation is proposed, discuss which nerve is being targeted, the expected recovery, and how success will be judged.

Contact your treating team promptly for worsening pain with fever, increasing redness or drainage near the injection site, or new severe symptoms after the procedure. Seek urgent medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening weakness in an arm or leg.
