Do you need nuchal translucency scan after dating scan?

A dating scan helps estimate gestational age and may check the pregnancy location, heartbeat, and early development. A nuchal translucency scan measures the fluid space at the back of the baby’s neck during early pregnancy. It is used as part of screening for some chromosomal conditions and may be combined with other information; it does not diagnose a condition by itself.

Having a dating scan does not replace or automatically include nuchal translucency screening. The timing of the pregnancy, the available screening pathway, the scan findings, and your preferences all matter. If the suitable window has passed, your clinician can explain other screening or diagnostic options.

Ask your maternity team which screening options are available and the date range in which the scan can be performed.
