Do you need custom orthotics after gait analysis?

Short answer

Custom orthotics may be useful after gait analysis when a clear gait finding relates to symptoms and a specific support is planned.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Gait analysis includes
Walking pattern, alignment, foot contact and joint control
A device is not automatic
Symptoms and goals must fit the measured finding

What gait analysis can show

Gait analysis may examine your walking or running pattern, foot contact, step symmetry, joint alignment and control through the leg. A clinician combines these observations with your pain history, examination and goals. A device might be discussed if changing pressure or guiding motion could make activity more comfortable. Other findings may point towards strengthening, mobility work, technique changes, rest or different footwear. The video or measurements are tools for a clinical decision, not a diagnosis on their own.

What to do next

Tell the clinician what activity you want to return to and where discomfort starts. Take your usual sports or work shoes to the appointment. Ask whether the recommendation is for a custom orthotic, a temporary trial or another intervention, and agree on a review plan. Wear any new insert for short periods at first if advised, checking for pressure points and changes in symptoms. Do not continue a device that causes new numbness, blisters or worsening pain.

When to seek care promptly

Get prompt assessment for sudden inability to bear weight, marked swelling, a cold or discoloured foot, new weakness, significant numbness or an open injury. These symptoms require more than gait modification. Arrange review if pain persists, your walking deteriorates, or the orthotic changes your symptoms without improving function.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which gait feature matters clinically, what the orthotic is expected to change, whether exercises or footwear could address the same issue, and how success will be judged. Clarify fitting, wear progression and follow-up.
