Do you need a cone biopsy after colposcopy?

Colposcopy examines the cervix and may provide a small biopsy. If that assessment suggests significant changes, or if the affected area extends into the cervical canal, a cone biopsy may give a larger, deeper piece of tissue for diagnosis and treatment.

Some people instead have surveillance or a smaller treatment, depending on the findings, age, pregnancy plans and whether the entire area can be assessed. A recommendation does not by itself mean cancer.

Ask for the colposcopy and biopsy findings in plain language and confirm why a cone biopsy is being considered. Tell the gynaecology team about pregnancy or plans to conceive, previous cervical procedures, allergies and medicines that affect bleeding. Discuss anaesthesia, recovery, specimen results and follow-up.

After colposcopy or cone biopsy, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, faintness or a bad-smelling discharge. Before treatment, report new heavy bleeding, persistent pelvic pain or pregnancy promptly so the plan can be reviewed.

Ask what the biopsy showed, whether the abnormal area reaches the canal, what alternatives exist, how the procedure may affect future pregnancy, and when the tissue result and follow-up plan will be available.
