Do You Need a Referral for Urodynamic Testing?

Urodynamic testing examines how the bladder stores and releases urine. Depending on the question, it may measure urine flow, bladder pressure, bladder sensation and leakage while the bladder fills and empties. Results can help distinguish patterns such as stress leakage, urgency-related symptoms or difficulty emptying.

The referral may come from a general practitioner, gynaecologist, urologist or continence clinician. A specialist usually reviews your history, urine symptoms, medicines and previous treatments before deciding whether testing is needed.

Ask the service whether a referral is required and whether you should arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Keep a record of frequency, urgency, leakage, night-time urination and fluid intake if requested. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, urinary infection symptoms, catheter use and medicines that affect urination.

You may be asked to provide a urine sample before testing. Follow instructions about medicines rather than stopping them independently. The clinician should explain each step, catheter use, discomfort to expect and how results will guide treatment.

Tell the clinic before testing if you have burning urine, fever, visible blood, inability to pass urine or a suspected urinary infection, because the appointment may need review. After testing, seek advice for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding or inability to urinate.
