Do you need a referral for thyroid removal surgery?

A hospital may accept a direct appointment, while another may first request an assessment by a primary care doctor, endocrinologist, ear, nose and throat surgeon, or surgical oncologist. Contact the chosen hospital before booking so its current process is clear.

A referral sends relevant clinical information to the specialist who will assess whether thyroidectomy is appropriate. It does not commit you to surgery. The surgeon reviews the reason for treatment, thyroid imaging, laboratory results, any biopsy report, medicines, and health conditions that may affect anaesthesia or recovery.

Removal may involve part or all of the thyroid. The planned extent depends on the thyroid problem, its location, test findings, and the goals discussed with the surgical team.

Call the hospital and ask whether a referral letter is required and which specialty should issue it. Bring your Emirates ID or other requested identification, a medicine list, allergy information, thyroid blood results, ultrasound or scan images and reports, and any needle-biopsy or pathology report.

If you have already seen a thyroid specialist, ask that clinic to send the clinical summary and original reports. Tell the booking team if the appointment concerns a confirmed or suspected cancer so the request reaches the appropriate service.

Seek urgent medical care for new or worsening difficulty breathing, severe trouble swallowing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or bleeding. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine surgical booking.

A new neck lump, persistent hoarseness, or ongoing swallowing difficulty should be assessed soon, but these symptoms do not by themselves establish a cancer diagnosis.

Ask why surgery is being considered, whether part or all of the thyroid may be removed, which tests are still needed, how thyroid hormone treatment might change afterward, and whom to contact if symptoms worsen before the appointment.
