Do You Need a Referral for Spinal Fusion?

Spinal fusion is an operation that joins selected vertebrae to reduce movement at a painful or unstable spinal segment. A referral does not mean that surgery has been decided. It usually starts an assessment with a spine surgeon, such as a neurosurgeon or spine surgeon, who reviews your history, examination, imaging, previous treatment, and general health.

Ask your primary doctor or treating clinician whether a referral is appropriate and which records should accompany it. Bring a list of medicines, previous procedures, imaging reports, and details about physiotherapy or other treatments you have tried. The specialist may discuss non-surgical options, the goals of fusion, recovery demands, and alternatives before recommending any operation. You can also ask the hospital or clinic whether direct appointments are accepted in your setting.

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe back pain after a major injury. Fever with severe spinal pain or a wound that becomes increasingly red and draining also needs prompt assessment.

Ask what problem the fusion is intended to address, what findings support it, which alternatives remain, and what recovery would involve. Clarify who will coordinate the referral and whether additional imaging or medical clearance is needed.
