Do You Need a Referral for a Pelvic MRI?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field to create detailed images of pelvic organs and nearby tissues. The referral tells the radiology team what symptoms, examination findings, or known condition need assessment. It also helps them choose the appropriate protocol. Tell the referring clinician and imaging centre about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, and previous reactions to contrast material.

Ask the imaging provider whether it accepts referrals from your clinician and whether any preparation is required. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, or arriving early. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery and other metallic items as directed. During the scan you will need to remain still inside the scanner; tell staff if you have anxiety in enclosed spaces so they can discuss practical support before the appointment.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe sudden pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever with severe illness, or inability to pass urine. An MRI referral is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Contact the requesting clinician promptly if symptoms change significantly while you are waiting, especially if pain, bleeding, or abdominal swelling is increasing.

Ask what the MRI is intended to clarify, whether another scan would answer the question, whether contrast is planned, and how you should prepare. Confirm when and how results will be explained and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
