Do you need a referral for nuchal translucency scan?

The scan uses ultrasound to measure the fluid space at the back of the baby's neck as part of early pregnancy screening. It is considered alongside gestational age, ultrasound findings and sometimes blood testing. A referral helps the maternal-fetal medicine team confirm that the scan is being scheduled in the appropriate window and explain what screening can and cannot show.

Ask your obstetrician, midwife or maternity clinic whether they will send the referral. If you contact an imaging centre directly, ask about referral requirements, pregnancy records and the information needed to estimate gestational age. Confirm whether a separate blood test is offered and how results will reach your maternity clinician.

The scan is planned care, not emergency treatment. Contact your maternity service promptly for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, fainting or any sudden concern during pregnancy. Urgent symptoms should be assessed even if your scan appointment is pending.
