Do you need a referral for loop excision of the cervix?

Loop excision, also called LLETZ or LEEP, removes a small area of the cervix for treatment and laboratory examination. The referral usually follows cervical screening, colposcopy, or a biopsy result that needs further management.

The receiving team may be colposcopy, gynaecology, or gynaecological oncology, depending on the findings and local service. The referral does not by itself mean cancer has been diagnosed; it means your result needs an appropriate specialist review.

Contact the clinician or screening service that gave you the result and ask whether the referral has been sent. Request a copy of your result, ask where the appointment will take place, and tell the service if you may be pregnant, take blood-thinning medicine, or have a bleeding condition.
