Do you need a referral for a hormonal coil?

A hormonal coil, also called an IUS or hormonal IUD, is placed inside the uterus. A consultation checks your contraception goals, menstrual pattern, medical history, medicines and possibility of pregnancy. The clinician may also discuss sexually transmitted infection testing, cervical screening and whether an examination is appropriate.

Referral rules depend on where you receive care. A primary-care clinician, family-planning service or gynaecology clinic may arrange the consultation directly, while another service may ask for a referral before booking the fitting appointment.

Contact the clinic and ask whether it offers hormonal-coil consultations and fittings, whether a referral is required, and whether the consultation and insertion happen on the same day. Tell the service if you recently gave birth, had a miscarriage, have pelvic symptoms or use medicines that affect bleeding.

Before fitting, seek prompt medical advice for severe pelvic pain, heavy unexplained bleeding, fever, unusual discharge or a possible pregnancy. After insertion, urgent assessment is needed for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, fainting, or concern that the coil has moved or come out.

Ask whether the hormonal coil suits your health and bleeding goals, which clinic should provide it, and whether you need a referral. Clarify how insertion is performed, expected bleeding changes, warning symptoms and the timing of follow-up.
