Do you need a referral for hip arthroscopy?

Hip arthroscopy uses small instruments and a camera to examine or treat selected problems inside the hip. A surgeon first reviews your symptoms, movement, strength, previous treatment, and imaging. A referral can provide this history and help determine whether the pain comes from the hip or another area such as the lower back. Not every hip problem is suitable for arthroscopy, so the consultation is part of deciding whether it is appropriate.

Ask the clinic whether you need a referral and whether a primary-care, sports-medicine, or orthopedic clinician can provide it. Gather imaging reports and details about pain during sitting, walking, pivoting, or sport. List treatments already tried and their effects. At consultation, discuss the suspected cause, alternatives, anaesthesia, rehabilitation, activity restrictions, and what findings would change the plan.

Seek urgent assessment after a major fall or collision, inability to bear weight, a visibly shortened or rotated leg, severe sudden pain, fever with a hot swollen joint, or new leg weakness or numbness. These features need medical evaluation and should not wait for a routine arthroscopy consultation.

Ask what the examination and scans show, whether non-surgical care remains reasonable, and why arthroscopy is being suggested. Discuss expected rehabilitation milestones, driving and work limits, possible alternatives, and symptoms that should prompt a call after the procedure.
