An electrocardiogram records the heart’s electrical activity through skin sensors placed on the chest and limbs. A clinician may request it for chest discomfort, palpitations, breathlessness, fainting, or as part of a health assessment. The tracing is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, medicines, and medical history. An ECG is a test, not a complete explanation for every heart symptom, so further assessment may be needed.

Ask the diagnostic centre whether it accepts self-booking and whether a doctor’s request is required. Bring your medicine list and any previous heart-test information. Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and tell the technician if you have skin sensitivity or difficulty lying flat.
