Do you need a referral for an arthrogram?

An arthrogram is imaging of a joint after contrast material is placed into the joint space. It can help clarify problems involving structures such as cartilage, ligaments, or the joint lining. Depending on the question, the contrast study may be combined with MRI or another form of imaging. A radiology team explains the procedure and checks relevant medical details beforehand.

The request should state the joint being examined, the symptoms or suspected injury, and the clinical question. This helps the imaging service choose the appropriate protocol.

Ask the referring clinician or radiology centre whether a referral, imaging request, or prior authorisation is needed. Tell them about allergies or previous reactions to contrast, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney problems, bleeding conditions, and medicines that affect clotting. Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, and medication on the day.

Bring earlier scan reports and details of prior joint surgery or injections. Arrange practical support if the examined joint may be sore or movement may be limited afterwards.

After the procedure, contact the imaging service or seek urgent help for worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or faintness. Mild temporary soreness can occur, but symptoms that intensify or concern you should be assessed.
