What should you know about DNA index flow cytometry?

A laboratory team prepares cells from a sample and passes them through an instrument one at a time. Fluorescent signals are used to estimate each cell’s DNA content. The DNA index compares the measured DNA content with the expected content of a normal reference cell. A result may describe a cell population as having a typical DNA amount, extra DNA, or less DNA; the wording and clinical meaning depend on the sample and the laboratory method.

This measurement is one part of interpretation. Doctors may consider it alongside the cell appearance under a microscope, immunophenotyping, chromosome or molecular findings, blood results, and the clinical picture. It does not by itself identify every cancer, determine the origin of a sample, or predict what treatment will work.

Ask which sample was tested, what reference was used, and whether the report gives a DNA index value or a descriptive category. Ask how the finding fits with the pathology or haematology diagnosis and whether another test is needed to clarify it. If the sample came from bone marrow, the team may explain how the result relates to the marrow examination and other cell studies.

Keep the laboratory report with your other results. A specialist can translate technical terms into a diagnosis and care plan; do not try to interpret an isolated value without the report’s reference information.

Contact the clinician who ordered the test if you have not received an explanation, the report recommends additional testing, or your symptoms have changed. Seek urgent medical care for severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, or a high fever, especially if you are receiving cancer treatment or have been told your immune defences are low. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the DNA index result.
