What should you know about DIY subcision?

Subcision is a clinician-performed procedure for selected depressed, tethered scars. After cleaning and numbing the area, a sterile instrument is passed under the skin to release fibrous attachments that pull the scar downward. The anatomy, scar type, depth, and location determine whether this approach fits. Raised scars, active acne, infection, bleeding problems, or certain medicines may change the plan.

Do not puncture, cut, or tunnel under a scar at home, even with a new needle or a device sold for microneedling. Home tools cannot provide sterile depth control or protect nearby vessels and nerves. Arrange a dermatology assessment so the scar can be classified and treatment options compared. Some people may be offered supervised subcision, while others may benefit from acne-scar laser treatment or a different approach. Follow wound-care advice closely if a procedure is performed.

If you have already tried DIY subcision, seek medical care for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing pain, warmth, pus, spreading redness, fever, numbness, or a rapidly enlarging lump. Prompt review can limit problems after contamination or tissue injury. Do not apply irritating chemicals or keep reopening the area.

Ask whether the scar is tethered, what risks apply to its location, whether active acne needs treatment first, how many stages may be needed, and what aftercare protects healing skin.
