Diverticulosis in Spanish: what to know

The pouches, called diverticula, develop where the bowel wall is weaker. Diverticulosis is different from diverticulitis, which describes inflammation or infection of a pouch. A scan or bowel examination may find diverticulosis unexpectedly. It does not by itself explain every episode of abdominal discomfort.

Some people notice bloating, altered bowel habits or constipation, while others feel entirely well. Abdominal pain that is severe, persistent or accompanied by fever should be assessed rather than attributed to diverticulosis. Keep bowel movements comfortable by drinking fluids regularly, adding fibre gradually through foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, and staying physically active if you are able. A sudden large increase in fibre can worsen bloating, so build up slowly.

Do not start laxatives, fibre supplements or pain medicines without checking that they suit you, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Seek urgent medical help for heavy or repeated rectal bleeding, faintness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever or inability to pass stool or gas.
