Diverticulosis in the left colon

The left colon is the section of the large bowel on the lower left side of the abdomen before the rectum. Diverticulosis there describes pouches in the bowel wall; it does not by itself show that the pouches are inflamed. Some people have no symptoms, while others notice constipation, bloating, or intermittent discomfort.

Left-sided abdominal pain can have many causes. Diverticulitis is different from uncomplicated diverticulosis and may cause persistent pain, fever, nausea, or feeling unwell. A clinician uses the complete symptom pattern and examination to decide what needs investigation.

If your clinician agrees, build fiber gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Drink suitable fluids regularly and keep physically active. Increasing fiber quickly can cause gas, so adjust portions in small steps and record what you tolerate.

Seek urgent help for severe or worsening pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, a very swollen abdomen, or blood in the stool. Prompt assessment is also needed for new abdominal pain with fever or a significant change in bowel function. The left-sided location does not make these warning signs safe to ignore.
