Treatment for diverticulitis perforation

A perforation is a hole or leak through the bowel wall. A small contained leak may remain close to the intestine, while a larger leak can spread infection through the abdomen. Examination, blood tests, and imaging help the team understand the situation and look for an abscess or widespread inflammation.

Treatment is chosen from the clinical picture rather than the scan wording alone. Doctors consider pain, temperature, blood pressure, hydration, bowel function, other health conditions, and how the body responds during observation.

Hospital treatment may include fluids through a vein, antibiotics when infection is present, pain relief, and close observation. If an abscess has formed, a specialist may drain it through the skin. A leak that cannot be controlled, or infection that is spreading, may require surgery to wash out the abdomen and repair or remove the affected bowel.

Ask the treating team before eating, drinking, or taking regular medicines. Recovery plans vary and may include gradual meals, wound care, bowel monitoring, and follow-up. Do not delay assessment while trying home remedies or unused medicines.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for severe or rapidly increasing pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, difficulty breathing, cold or clammy skin, or fever with shaking chills. After treatment, return urgently if pain, vomiting, fever, or weakness comes back or worsens.
