What should you know about diva flow cytometry?

The laboratory passes cells through a flow cytometer and uses fluorescent markers to examine features on or within them. The software helps staff collect, display and interpret those measurements.

You may see “Diva” on a laboratory note, instrument screen or report because it is associated with the system used to handle flow-cytometry data. The clinically meaningful part is the flow-cytometry interpretation: which cell populations were found, what markers they carried and whether the pattern needs correlation with other findings.

Flow cytometry can be performed on blood, bone marrow or another cell-containing sample. It may help classify abnormal blood or immune cells, but the result is considered alongside the blood count, cell appearance, symptoms and any tissue or molecular tests.

Confirm what sample will be taken and whether it comes from a routine blood draw, a bone marrow procedure or another site. Preparation depends on the collection method rather than on the Diva software. Follow the collection team’s instructions and mention medicines that affect bleeding if an invasive sample is planned.

When the report is ready, ask for the overall interpretation rather than trying to decode individual marker names. A marker can occur on several cell types, so its meaning depends on the complete pattern and the clinical context.

After a simple blood draw, seek advice if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure or if swelling and pain at the puncture site are worsening. After bone marrow or another invasive collection, contact the clinical team for persistent bleeding, fever, spreading redness, drainage or increasing pain. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask which sample is being tested, what cell disorder the laboratory is assessing, when the interpreted report should be available and which other results will be reviewed with it. If the report mentions an abnormal population, ask what that pattern means in your specific case and whether another sample or test is needed.
