Disseminated bone metastases explained

This is metastatic cancer, not a new cancer that began in bone. Care focuses on controlling the underlying cancer, relieving symptoms, preserving movement, and reducing problems caused by weakened bone or altered calcium levels.

Cancer cells in bone can disrupt the normal cycle in which bone is broken down and rebuilt. Affected areas may become painful or structurally weak, although some deposits are first found on imaging. Breast, lung, and prostate cancers are among the cancers that can spread to bone. The original cancer type still guides treatment because the cells retain features of that cancer.

Assessment may include imaging, blood tests, a review of pain and mobility, and occasionally a tissue sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. The location of deposits matters: disease near the spinal cord or in a weight-bearing bone can create urgent risks even when pain initially seems manageable.

Tell your oncology team about new pain, pain that changes with movement, falls, weakness, constipation, unusual thirst, or increasing drowsiness. Do not force exercise through focal bone pain. A clinician or physiotherapist can advise which movements are suitable and whether walking aids or support are needed.

Treatment is individualised. It may combine therapy for the original cancer with pain medicines, radiotherapy to troublesome areas, and bone-strengthening medicine. Dental assessment may be advised before certain bone-strengthening treatments. Keep a current medicine list and describe how symptoms affect sleep, walking, and self-care so the plan targets practical needs.

Seek emergency care for new leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with neurological symptoms; pressure on the spinal cord must be assessed quickly. Sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, or a limb that looks shortened or misshapen may indicate a fracture. Marked confusion, profound drowsiness, repeated vomiting, or severe dehydration also needs prompt evaluation.

Ask which bones need protection, whether any area is at risk of fracture or spinal cord pressure, and what level of activity is suitable. Clarify the goal of each treatment, expected side effects, how pain medicines should be adjusted, and whom to contact if symptoms change outside clinic hours.
