What should you know about disposable otoscope?

An otoscope provides light and magnification so a clinician can look for wax, irritation, swelling, discharge, a foreign object, or changes behind the eardrum. Disposable parts are discarded after use, which supports infection-control practice. The view can be limited by wax, a narrow canal, movement, or pain, and findings must be interpreted alongside symptoms and hearing changes.

Do not push cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the ear before an examination. Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, recent swimming, injury, hearing loss, or anything placed in the ear. For a child, keep them calm and still; a parent or carer may help with positioning. The otoscope should be handled by a trained professional, not used to probe deeply at home.

Arrange an assessment for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, repeated infections, or suspected wax blockage. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or an object that cannot be removed safely. Fever or marked swelling around the ear also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask what the examination showed, whether wax prevented a clear view, and whether you need treatment or a hearing check. For a child, ask whether a child health consultation is appropriate and what signs should trigger review.
