What should you know about a dislocated shoulder maneuver?

A dislocated shoulder maneuver should be performed by a trained clinician after assessment, not attempted at home. Forceful pulling or rotating can worsen a fracture, damage nerves or blood vessels, or injure the soft tissues around the joint.

A maneuver is a controlled set of movements used to guide the upper-arm bone back into the shoulder socket. Before this, a clinician checks the arm’s shape, circulation, sensation and movement, and may arrange imaging to look for a fracture. Pain relief or sedation may be used so the shoulder muscles can relax.

After reduction, the shoulder is supported and reassessed. A first dislocation or repeated episodes can be associated with shoulder instability. Rehabilitation helps restore movement and strength once the joint is safe.

Keep the arm still in the position that is most comfortable. Support it with a sling or folded cloth without forcing the elbow or shoulder into a new position. Apply a wrapped cold pack, avoid food and drink in case a procedure is needed, and arrange urgent medical assessment. Do not let someone else try to put the shoulder back.

Treatment may include clinician-led Shoulder Reduction, followed by Physiotherapy. Repeated instability may lead to a discussion about Shoulder Stabilisation Surgery.

Seek emergency care immediately after a fall, collision or sudden pulling injury if the shoulder looks out of place, the arm cannot move normally, or pain is severe. Treat pale, blue, cold or numb fingers, increasing tingling, heavy bleeding, an open wound, or severe swelling as urgent warning signs. Do not drive yourself if the arm is unsupported or you feel faint.
