What should you know about disease where you cough up blood?

Blood may appear as streaks mixed with mucus after forceful coughing, an infection, or inflammation in the breathing tubes. Acute bronchitis and a common cold can irritate the airway; asthma, bronchiectasis, or a long-lasting cough can also be relevant. Blood from the nose, mouth, or throat can sometimes be mistaken for blood from the lungs, while acid reflux may trigger repeated coughing without being the source of the blood itself.

The amount, colour, timing, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician judge urgency. Tell them whether the blood is fresh or dark, whether it is mixed with phlegm, and whether you have fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort, dizziness, or unexplained weight change.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment, even if the bleeding stops. Avoid smoking and strenuous activity while waiting, and do not take someone else’s medicine. Note how often it happens and bring a list of medicines, especially blood thinners. A clinician may examine your nose, throat, and chest and decide whether tests or imaging are needed.

Seek emergency help if you cough up more than a small streak, the bleeding is continuing, or you have trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or severe weakness. Treat sudden breathlessness or collapse as an emergency regardless of the suspected cause.
