Disease Caused by Varicella Zoster Virus

Chickenpox commonly causes an itchy rash that changes into fluid-filled blisters and then crusts. Fever and tiredness may accompany the rash. After chickenpox, the virus stays inactive in nerve tissue; a later reactivation can cause shingles, usually as painful skin changes affecting one side of the body. A blistering rash can have other causes, so the pattern, timing, and examination matter.

Arrange a GP consultation if you suspect chickenpox or shingles, especially when the rash is spreading, painful, or affecting someone with a weakened immune system. Keep blisters clean, avoid scratching, and wash hands after touching the rash. Antiviral treatment may be considered for selected cases, with timing and suitability decided by a clinician. An oral antihistamine may help itch when recommended for the person affected. Chickenpox vaccination is a preventive option for eligible people.

Seek prompt medical advice for a rash near the eye, severe pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Fever with extensive blisters also deserves assessment. Avoid close contact with newborn babies, pregnant people, and those with reduced immunity until a clinician confirms the illness is no longer contagious.
