What to know about a Discovery CT scanner

The Discovery name identifies a scanner product family; it does not tell you the exact examination, radiation setting, or whether contrast will be used. Your imaging team selects the protocol for the body area and clinical question.

During CT imaging, an X-ray source rotates around you while detectors collect information from multiple angles. A computer reconstructs this information into thin image slices. In cancer care, clinicians may use those images to locate an abnormality, plan a procedure, assess the extent of disease, or compare findings over time. Image quality and available features differ between scanner models and facilities.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and arrival time. Tell the imaging team before the scan if you may be pregnant, have kidney problems, previously reacted to contrast material, or take medicines that could affect preparation. Remove metal items when requested. You may need to hold your breath briefly, and remaining still helps prevent blurred images.

If contrast is planned, staff may give it through a vein or ask you to drink it. A temporary warm feeling or metallic taste can occur with injected contrast. Ask what type of contrast is planned and whether any preparation applies to you.

After injected contrast, seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or a rapidly worsening widespread rash. Contact the imaging service promptly if increasing pain, marked swelling, blistering, or skin colour change develops around the injection site. These concerns relate to the contrast or injection rather than the CT scanner name.

Ask which body area will be scanned, what question the images are meant to answer, whether contrast is needed, and when the report should reach the clinician who requested it. If you have had earlier scans elsewhere, ask whether those images should be supplied for comparison.
