What should you know about discharge in corner of eye?

Tears normally move toward the inner corner and drain through tiny openings. Small amounts of pale or clear residue can dry there, especially after sleep. Persistent watering with corner crust may occur when drainage is narrowed. Itching, watery eyes, and exposure to pollen or dust can occur with allergic conjunctivitis. Redness, soreness, and thicker discharge can occur with conjunctivitis. These patterns overlap, so the corner location does not establish a diagnosis.

Material at the outer corner may instead reflect tears mixed with skin oils or cosmetics. A new product, smoke, or grit can irritate the surface. Contact lens use raises the importance of getting advice when redness, pain, or vision change accompanies discharge.

Clean your hands first. Soak a fresh clean pad in sterile saline or cooled boiled water and gently wipe the closed eyelid from the inner corner outward. Use a separate pad for the other eye. Avoid rubbing, scraping, shared towels, and non-prescribed drops. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses while irritation or discharge continues. If the material returns frequently, note when it appears and whether watering, itch, redness, or pain accompanies it.

Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, pronounced redness, swelling around the eye, injury, chemical exposure, or a foreign body. Get urgent help if symptoms worsen quickly. Arrange a clinical review when discharge persists, recurs often, or occurs in a newborn or contact-lens wearer.

Ask whether the discharge pattern fits allergy, infection, or a drainage issue; whether testing or treatment is needed; and how long to avoid lenses or cosmetics. Describe its colour, timing, side affected, and associated symptoms.
