What should you know about direct hair transplant?

A clinician examines the pattern and cause of hair loss, the density of the donor area, scalp health, and your expectations. During surgery, follicular units are collected from a donor region and placed into planned recipient sites. The design considers the hairline, direction, density, and future changes in surrounding hair.

Transplanted hairs can shed temporarily before new growth develops. The visible result changes gradually, and existing untreated hair may continue to thin if its underlying cause is active. Hair loss may relate to male or female pattern hair loss, traction alopecia, inflammation, or another condition, so diagnosis matters before choosing surgery.

Discuss medicines, smoking, scalp conditions, previous procedures, and any history of unusual scarring. Follow instructions about washing, sleeping position, exercise, hats, and sun exposure. Do not rub or scratch grafts while they are healing. Attend follow-up visits so the team can check the donor and recipient areas and address concerns early.

Ask for a written plan describing graft placement, expected shedding, wound care, work or activity restrictions, and options for protecting existing hair. Non-surgical treatments may sometimes complement surgery or be considered before it.

Call the surgical team for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding, marked swelling, or grafts that appear displaced. Urgent medical care is appropriate for severe weakness, breathing trouble, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not apply unapproved products to the scalp while waiting for advice.

Ask what is causing your hair loss, whether the donor supply is adequate, how the hairline will be designed, who performs each part of surgery, and how existing hair will be monitored.
