Dilapan for induction of labour

A trained clinician places slender Dilapan rods through the vagina and cervix. They absorb fluid and expand gradually, which can help the cervix become softer and more open. The rods are removed before birth. The process may be used when the cervix is not yet ready for contractions, including when induction is advised for a pregnancy complication such as pre-eclampsia.

Cervical preparation is different from starting contractions. After the rods are removed, the maternity team may recommend breaking the waters or using medicines such as misoprostol or oxytocin, depending on examination findings and monitoring.

You may feel pressure, cramping, pelvic discomfort, or spotting during placement and while the rods are in place. Tell the team if pain becomes difficult, fluid leaks, bleeding increases, or contractions begin. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and monitoring. Ask how long the rods are expected to remain and what the next induction step will be.

Tell the maternity team immediately about heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, feeling faint, reduced fetal movement, suspected waters breaking, or regular painful contractions. Contact them urgently if a rod comes out or you cannot pass urine. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or a medical emergency away from the maternity unit.
