What should you know about digital pulse oximeter?

The clip uses light to estimate oxygen saturation and pulse from a fingertip. It does not measure breathing effort, lung function or the cause of a symptom. Cold hands, movement, nail products, poor circulation and an insecure fit can affect the signal. Skin pigmentation and device limitations may also affect accuracy. One number should never outweigh how the person looks and feels.

Rest quietly, warm the hand and place the device on a clean finger according to its instructions. Keep still until the display settles, then record the reading with the time and symptoms. Repeat if the signal is weak, but do not keep checking instead of seeking help. Use the same device consistently when monitoring an ongoing condition, and follow the plan given by your clinician.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion or inability to stay awake, regardless of the display. Contact a clinician promptly if readings remain concerning for you, fall with worsening symptoms or differ sharply from your usual pattern. A GP consultation can interpret the result alongside examination and medical history.
