What should you know about diffuse lipoma?

A lipoma is made of mature fatty tissue and commonly feels soft, rubbery, or doughy beneath the skin. A diffuse lipoma spreads through nearby fatty tissue rather than sitting as a neat, easily outlined nodule. It may be painless, but its size, location, or pressure on nearby structures can cause discomfort or limit movement.

A new or changing lump should not be labelled a lipoma from touch alone. A clinician considers its depth, mobility, consistency, growth pattern, and relationship to nearby tissue. Ultrasound or another scan may be used when the examination is not conclusive.

Book an appointment for a lump that is new, enlarging, deep, fixed, or bothersome. Bring details about when it appeared, whether it changes with movement, and any pain, numbness, or weakness. If the diagnosis is a straightforward lipoma and it causes no problems, monitoring may be reasonable. Removal can be discussed when the lump is painful, restricts activity, is cosmetically troubling, or needs a definite tissue diagnosis.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or massage it aggressively. Keep a simple record of changes in size or symptoms while waiting for assessment.

Arrange prompt medical review for rapid growth, a hard or fixed feel, persistent pain, skin ulceration, unexplained weakness, or a lump that seems attached to deeper tissue. Seek urgent help for severe pain, sudden swelling, or new loss of function. These signs require assessment and do not establish the diagnosis by themselves.

Ask whether the lump is superficial or deep, whether imaging or a biopsy is needed, and what change should trigger review. If removal is considered, discuss the incision, scarring, recovery, recurrence risk, and how the tissue will be examined.
