Using Differin and Skinoren together

Differin contains adapalene, a topical retinoid used mainly for acne. Skinoren contains azelaic acid, which may be prescribed for acne, uneven pigmentation or some inflammatory skin problems. They work differently, so a clinician may use them for separate goals, but both can cause stinging, dryness, peeling or redness.

The diagnosis matters before combining them. Acne, rosacea, post-inflammatory marks and dermatitis can overlap in appearance but need different care. Irritation can make dark marks more noticeable and can make it harder to tell whether the underlying condition is improving.

Use only the amounts and schedule prescribed. A clinician may suggest applying the products at separate times, starting one product before the other, or reducing frequency while the skin adjusts. Apply to clean, dry skin, avoid eyelids and lips, use a gentle moisturiser, and protect exposed skin from sunlight.

Avoid adding scrubs, harsh cleansers, strong exfoliating acids or other retinoids unless the prescriber approves them. If significant burning, swelling, cracking or persistent peeling develops, stop and contact the clinician for specific advice rather than pushing through it.

Arrange review if the rash worsens, new bumps continue, pigmentation changes quickly or irritation does not settle after the routine is adjusted. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, blistering, widespread rash or breathing difficulty. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or using other prescription skin medicines.

Ask what each product is treating, whether they should be used on the same day, where each one belongs in your routine, and how long adjustment may take. Ask which reaction is expected and which means you should stop, and whether a topical retinoid is appropriate for your skin.
