Different Types of Stings: What to Know

A single insect sting may produce a small, painful or itchy area around the contact point. Some reactions create more swelling over the following hours, while others cause hives beyond the sting site. Multiple stings can produce several separate marks. A fungal condition such as [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/) is not caused by a sting.

Move away from the source and gently wash the skin. A cool compress can ease local discomfort; avoid scratching, which can damage the skin and invite infection. If a visible stinger is present, ask a pharmacist or clinician how to remove it safely. Do not apply unknown household chemicals. For a persistent or extensive reaction, a clinician may recommend treatment based on the appearance and your symptoms; antifungal medicines are for fungal infections, not ordinary stings.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, or widespread hives after a sting. Seek prompt medical care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, eye involvement, fever, pus, or redness spreading from the site. A reaction that does not settle or a mark that keeps scaling should be examined rather than repeatedly treated as a sting.
